Who issues which fines?

In general, parking, public transport and Salik-related violations come under the RTA, while most traffic violations such as speeding are issued by the police. Fines from other emirates sit with the police there. If you only check one portal you can miss something, so check the RTA and the police channels that apply to your vehicle.

How to check your fines

  1. Open the official channel. Use the RTA website or app, and the Dubai Police channels for traffic fines.
  2. Search with your details. You can usually search with your plate number, traffic file number or licence details.
  3. Review each fine. Check the date, place and type of violation.
  4. Pay or dispute. Pay through the official channel, or follow the dispute process shown there if you think a fine is wrong.
  5. Clear fines before you renew. Unpaid fines can block vehicle registration renewal.

How Salik works

Salik is Dubai's electronic toll system. Each time you pass a toll gate with a Salik tag, the toll is taken from your prepaid account. The widely reported charge is AED 4 per pass with no daily or monthly cap, with an exception at Al Mamzar where crossing both gates in the same direction within an hour is charged once. Tolls can vary by gate or time, so confirm the current tariff in the Salik app.

Ways to recharge Salik

  • Salik app or website: pay by debit or credit card.
  • Auto-recharge: set a threshold so the account tops up when it runs low.
  • Vouchers: available at petrol stations and some retail partners.
  • Bank channels: some ATMs, online banking and mobile banking apps.

Keep a comfortable buffer, for example AED 50 to 100, so a busy week does not leave you at zero. Driving through a gate with an empty account can lead to a fine, so check the Salik app for the current amount.
