When should you renew?

You can start the renewal up to six months before your Emirates ID expires, so there is no reason to wait for the last week. For residents, the card is normally issued and renewed alongside your residence permit, so if your visa is also close to expiry, deal with it at the same time.

If you renew more than a month after expiry, a daily late fine applies. The calculator below shows how it builds up.

How to renew your Emirates ID

  1. Check your expiry date. Open the UAEICP app or the ICP website and confirm the date and the status of your card.
  2. Check your other documents. Make sure your passport and residence permit are valid. An expiring passport or visa can hold up the application.
  3. Start the application online. Use the ICP smart services website or the UAEICP app. You can also go to a customer happiness centre if you prefer to apply in person.
  4. Upload the documents and photo. The application lists exactly what is required for your case. Use a recent photo that meets ICP's specifications.
  5. Pay the fee. The fee depends on how long the new card is valid. The app shows the exact amount before you pay.
  6. Give biometrics if asked. If you are 15 or older and the system requests it, visit an ICP centre for fingerprints and a signature.
  7. Track and collect your card. Follow the status in the app and collect or receive the card as instructed.

What does renewal cost?

The renewal fee is set by ICP and depends on the validity period of the new card. We do not print a figure here because it could go out of date. The ICP app or website shows the exact amount before you pay.

The one figure published on the UAE government portal is the late fine, which is built into the calculator above: AED 20 per day once you are more than a month past expiry, up to a maximum of AED 1,000.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until the card has already expired, then paying a fine that was avoidable.
  • Starting the application while your passport or visa is about to expire.
  • Using an old or poor-quality photo that is rejected.
  • Ignoring SMS or email requests from ICP, such as a biometrics appointment.
  • Using unofficial websites that charge extra for forms you can fill in yourself.
